I read compulsively, eclectically and fannishly.

Northlanders Vol. 1: Sven The Returned - Brian Wood This first arc of Northlanders is sort of Game of Thrones writ small (even though that wasn't anywhere near as common a point of reference when it was originally released)—two unlikeable men squabble over while a greater force looms to annihilate them all, everyone says 'fuck' a lot (which is very anachronistic here as actual Viking swearing was much more creative), and the women may try to seize agency for themselves, but they are always vulnerable to brutal reductions in status (a woman's odds of making it out of this story roughly intact are apparently 1 in 3). The thing is, there's a lot more going on in A Game of Thrones, whereas here…not so much. Although the art is very pretty.
