I really wanted to enjoy this book more, but ultimately I just wasn't feeling it. The SFnal element was handled so clunkily, it felt like a poorly-reinvented wheel. It's too bad, because I was initially impressed by the protagonist's intellectual characterization, which is a rare thing to see done well; she actually has an appropriate range of interests and ideas about them for the bright Ph.D student she's supposed to be.
